Title: Info Please I'm a Newbie to GPS's
Post by: frankcamp on November 27, 2011, 04:53:01 PM
Greetings, I just downloaded one of the maps to a mini sd card with the card plugged into the computer.
Now I am wanting to be able to view the map on the computer screen so I can see if it has some areas I wanted on it and then use the sd card in the GPS.
My problem is when I try to open the downloaded file it does just that and shows me a bunch of files instead of being able to view a map .
What am I missing here to be able to see the map on the computer with the sd card plugged into the computer.
Do I need a special program ???
Advise Please thanks frank camp

You should look at the tutorials.  They should tell you everything you need to know.

Most likely, you did not correctly install your download. With very few exceptions, downloads are not installed directly on a card. Most maps include an installer program that puts the files on your computer where they may be accessed by Basecamp and Mapsource.

First, install Basecamp: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435

Then do this: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-garmin-basecamp/

Thanks Folks. I started reading the tutorials after I posted , Sorry I've been biting off more than I can chew lately , not enough time for everything.
I'll redo all this again and hope for the best.
Happy Holidays
