Title: Maps Transferred from another PC/Opening in BaseCamp
Post by: gatoruss on October 08, 2011, 08:17:27 PM
I previously downloaded the following maps from this site:  the Florida TOPO map (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/123/ (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/123/))  and the SE USA map (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/101/ (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/101/)).  I downloaded/installed them in my prior PC, into a "Maps" directory.   In addition, I successfully loaded the maps onto my Garmin Oregon 450.

I purchased a new lap top and copied the Maps" directory from my old desktop to my new laptop.
I had not bothered to mess around with MapSource or BaseCamp when I first downloaded the maps onto my desktop, but I would like to explore and investigate BaseCamp at this time.

I was following the tutorial at http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-garmin-basecamp/ (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-garmin-basecamp/) to view the maps in BaseCamp, but they are not in the "Maps" drop down menu.  So I was looking at the tutorial at http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-.img-files-into-mapsource-with-mapsettoolkit/ (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-.img-files-into-mapsource-with-mapsettoolkit/), but my situation does not seem to fit into either of the scenerios described in that tutorial.  I have a tbl file in each of the folders for the maps 9so the first part of the tutorial does not seem to apply to my case), but all my ".img" files have "all number names" (so the second part of the tutorial does not seem to apply to my case).

Am I missing something?  Or is there another way to get the maps opened in BaseCamp?  I guess I could delete the maps and reinstall on my laptop with the installer?

Thanks!

All you have to do is download them again, and install them onto your new computer. Copying them doesn't work and messing with cgpsmapper seems a bit over your head

You have a gift for understatement!   ;)

I uninstalled both maps, and downloaded the each again.  I installed the Florida Topo, but it is not loading into BaseCamp?  Following this tutorial (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-garmin-basecamp/ (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-garmin-basecamp/)), the only map that shows in the Map Dropdown menu or under View>Map Products is the "Global Map." ???

Note, in case it makes a difference, I am running Windows 7 (64bit).  When I installed the map, the installer wanted to install it under my Programs (86x) directory, but I prefer to collect my maps under a "Maps" subdirectory that I created in a directory where I save other stuff relating to my gps.

EDIT - I rebooted my laptop, but it did not make any difference.

Strange...I installed the SE Topo and it loaded into BaseCamp as advertised in the tutorial.  So, I uninstalled the Florida Topo again and reinstalled it...now it shows up in BaseCamp as well...go figure! :D

Sounds like you have a new 64-bit Win7 computer.  There is an issue with at 64-bit installer mapsets set (i.e. FL) if it is the first one to be installed.  SE topo is an older mapset using a 32-bit installer.
BTW - BaseCamp/MapSource only check for mapsets when they start-up.  A mapset installed while either running will not be 'seen' until the program is restarted.
