Title: street addressing w/cgpsmapper

That is another 'feature' (like 3D) that only Garmin knows how to do.

cgpsmapper Personal supports address search.  Lots of work though

I thought there were some posts on the OSM forums late last year saying it had not been reverse engineered. 
Did development on cgpsmapper begin again?

Indrid will be on my case for hijacking again. 

No, no new development in cgpsmapper but I think it's been possible for a while, since GPSmapedit permits house numbering.   The address search on my personal (not installable) version of Desert Southwest will search for streets.  If Oz updates the installer, I'll upload another copy that will support it as far as I've gotten with it.

I haven't tried mkgmap for a while, but the mkgmap listserv indicates that they have also got something working.
