I'm trying to generate a hillshade map of the continental US. The grid could be about somewhere between 6" (finest) and 30" (coarsest). The coarsest I can find on GM is the SRTM is 3". I could live with that, but the download is taking forever. (An hour with 0% progress.)
You can try ACE2. It is available at 3, 9, 30 seconds and 5 minutes.

Fraid not about the DEMs. I'm trying to generate a georeferenced grayscale shaded maps showing coarse relief of the USA. It would be a handy way to know where the mountains are without having to generate topos.

Thanks, ddabcd277, the eros data was just what I was looking for. A perfect fit for my hydrography.
You mean by .typ file? Relief by .typ? Forget about that! Beter use contours. Generating such .typ decrease dramatticaly the drawing speed. Not useful.

I think jbensman was referring to how Garmin adds DEM hillshade data to their topo maps. AFAIK that process is still a mystery to us hobby mappers.
