Post by: paddyr on June 23, 2011, 07:33:39 PM
Hi, does anyone know where I can get free NYC maps for my Garmin GPS?

My map of New Jersey includes the New York area. It is not capable of routing however, it will only show your position on the map. http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/294/

Thanks! BTW what exactly does routing do? I don't have it on any of the maps I currently have.

Routing will let you use MapSource or BaseCamp to calculate a turn by turn route from one point to another.  If you want to go from 5th Avenue and 43rd St. to 3rd Avenue and 5th St. the software will generate a route.  It will also generate a route from NYC to San Fransisco, CA. If you have a big enough map.

Generally for street routing it's best to purchase a Garmin map product, since the publicly available data isn't as accurate as the sort Garmin generates.
