So far, I've figured it out by experimentation, but some things are hard to figure, like "Map Skins". I believe these are to make the GPSMapedit screen resemble MapSource more closely, but I don't know how to generate one.
The skins are used with custom types - .typ file - to change the map appearance, like they do on the GPS. Last time I tried this, it didn't work quite as I expected so I don't use it.
I don't think there is a manual, but he provides some links here: http://www.geopainting.com/en/Howto.html
And a FAQ here: http://www.geopainting.com/en/faq.html
Interesting to note both links were updated this May. But nothing about skins.

Thanks, I was familiar with Malsingmaps, but it mostly contains stuff I've figured out by menu browsing.
Russian looks promising, but I'll need to find a much better translator than Google.
I should read the topics more closely. Sorry, about that. No need to read all that things. For creating non-NT .typ files or decompile them you can use this program

Just found out that GPSmapedit skins vary with output file. For MP files the skin file is simply the TXT version of a TYP file before it's compiled. Only problem is that GPSmapedit doesn't render my transparent/opaque polygon patterns at all, so if I have a forest made of that kind of pattern it doesn't render until I eliminate the skin. So it's not terribly useful.

;D
What I didn't understand from you original post, Boyd, was that the Typ.txt file was ALL there was to having a skin.
