Title: land ownership
Post by: shec6135 on February 07, 2011, 02:57:00 AM
there has got to be a better/cheaper way than using globalmapper or mapwel to find the boundaries of state game land and mark them on your gps... anyone have any ideas, or have any good info. on how you do this yourself?? thanks in advance -shaun

I've looked for public landownership data in OH a couple of times wanting to add OH to Eastern landownership.  But I have never been able to find and state data.  If you know a data source for state lands, let me know and I will add it to Eastern landownership.

Well of course the "better, cheaper way" is to have somebody else make the map for you.  ;)

But in the absence of that, you will need to first find the data and then learn how to turn it into a Garmin compatible map. That will involve some complexity, and better software usually makes the job easier. It's like the old saying: "You have three choices - good, cheap and easy. Pick any two."  ;D

I gave up on the fancy software and now just purchase  maps. The best 70$ I ever spent was on land use maps that showed property boundries and ownership.

You just wasted 70 bucks. I just saw this thread but my GPS topo maps for Idaho and Montana show very accurate and detailed public lands. They are even specially colored to easily identify them. I also have published on this site the cadastral layer for Montana which even shows private land parcel boudaries and who owns them. You should have checked out each state and the FREE maps they had to offer before buying anything. Oh well, thanks for helping out the economy!
