Title: Garmin 24k Topo Map
Post by: Hazelroth on June 07, 2010, 06:39:37 AM
Garmin indicates that on their 24k scale topo maps they include trail maps.  Some of the reviews I have read indicate that the number of trail maps is limited.  We are traveling to CO in July and maybe hiking Yale and Harvard.  Can anyone tell me if these topo maps have these trails on them and what is your opinion.  Thanks

Your best bet is a forest service or BLM map. The trail heads are marked on their maps. There are not many maps that have the trails marked. I know our local ATV club will not encourage letting out electronic trail maps, as many of these require local knowledge of conditions.

There are trails, and there are times of the year that you just cannot go on those trails.

Looks like you can download a .gpx track file from Trimbel Outdoors for free after registering.  Here is the link to Mount Harvard summit hike: http://chaffee.trimbleoutdoors.com/ViewTrip/30979   Mt. Yale summit hike: http://chaffee.trimbleoutdoors.com/ViewTrip/30773 I would think there are other free .gpx tracks available for the 14ers with some searching; maybe some else can provide links.

i have southwest map of that includes rocky national park. We have mapped out lots of trails throughout the park. I find that the main problem has been that most of them are not labelled with the typical trail name but again for the most part the 24k southwest map has a lot of trails. I will have to see if your trails are listed.

Garmin 24k Topo Map- does it have the Golden Gate State Park, CO trails?

Where can I get CO topo maps in general whether purchasing or downloading?

Thanks, BH

For free - on this site.
Without downloading and for free - I doubt it.
Best you could probably do would be to have a friend that has installed the files on his computer and can upload what you are interested in to your GPSr.

I use these Colorado Topo Maps all the time.  They have lots of trails and roads that the Garmin 24K maps do not have.   They also seem to me to be more detailed then the Garmin Maps.  Personally I think that this mapset it is worth the money.
