Title: Route, track & waypoint making on a Mac computer
Post by: zonesystempro on December 31, 2010, 05:15:36 PM
I'd like to create a route with tracks and waypoints for my GPS. I'm on a mac therefore I can't produce it with Mapsource. Other than purchasing an inexpensive pc to use Mapsource, does anyone know of any other programs in which I could accomplish this task? Look forward to any response. Thank you!

What you describe isn't "map making" - you just want to work with routes and tracks. It can be done with free software easily on your Mac. But you will need to install a routable map such as City Navigator or one of Garmin's 24k topo's in order to get routing.

Download and install Basecamp on your Mac. It works the same way on both Macs and PC's

Now you could also use RoadTrip on the Mac if you prefer. It's the Mac equivalent of Mapsource. But I think Basecamp is more feature rich. Try them both and see which you like better

Some of the newest model handhelds will only transfer waypoints correctly with Basecamp (such as the Oregon 450 or GPSMap 62).

Thanks for your quick reply. Both programs require a newer operating system than my current mac has. Damn! I'll have to look into whether my mac can support the upgrade to the operating system required. I'd rather spend my money on a bike than a computer any day. Thanks once again. It's very much appreciated.

I think you can find older versions of RoadTrip and Basecamp archived here. One of them will probably work on your machine. However, Garmin has come a long way recently with their mac software. Some of the older versions are rather buggy and slow. Still worth a try however.

Thanks so much for the added information. I downloaded the Basecamp file specific to my Mac and it works great. Much appreciated!  Have a great day.
