I have a Garmin Oregon 200 that I recently used on a hiking trip. The trip odometer seemed to be reading low, and was low in mileage compared to the guide books I have / trail sings. The overall distance shown on the trip odometer was 7.57 miles for the distance I walked, but when I uploaded the track to Mapsource and looked at the track properties, the total distance shown in Mapsource for that track was 8.7 miles, which is closer to what I believe to be true. Any ideas about this discrepancy? I just updated the Oregon software to the most recent version (after the hike) so I don't know what my previous OS version was, or whether the update fixes the problem if there is a problem.
There was a known bug like this in the old Oregon software. But also, in my experience, the trip odometer is never very accurate for hiking.
The same type of glitch exists with the Dakota 20 as well. Although they did improve it with the firmware updates.
I contacted Garmin and they told me the odometer was fixed with software version 3.8. The current (as of Sept 29, 2011) version of firmware available for download from their site is version 5.0. I installed this and the problem seems to be fixed.

Did you actually install Firmware 5.0 on your Oregon 200?
Because the last firmware update for all Oregon x00 models was 4.2

The 5.0 Firmware is for Oregon models x50.
If in fact you were able to install FW 5.0 on your Oregon 200, you are going to have multiple issues soon!
If you power up your Oregon 200 and select [SETUP] [ABOUT] what firmware version does it indicate?
Do you really have an Oregon 300, 400t, 450 and 550t? Wow, I thought I had too many GPSr's. ;D

Yes, and a new eTrex 30 and Montana 650 on the way also!

I am an OpenCaching.com ambassador and like to have multiple units with me, loaded and ready to go, so when I meet potential cachers, I can hand them a GPSr and say "Try it out!"
EDIT: Full disclosure = the 550t belongs to my significant other, but she only likes to use it out in the field, and always just hands it back to me after. I am responsible for keeping it updated and loaded with all relevant cache data and maps... :)
