General Discussion / Hatfield McCoy tracks
January 23, 2010, 12:48:23 PM
I ran into an interesting situation yesterday. I was able to get a transparent trail set for the hatfield McCoy ATV trails and sent it to the WV topo on BaseCamp and it worked great! but then I tried the same thing in MapSource and the only thing that is shown is the trailhead waypoint marker with no tracks. Any ideas?

GPSr Units / Re: Nuvi SD card question
January 23, 2010, 12:39:36 PM

The sandisk 2 GB micro SD card with the larger adapter is what I have been using all along. This way I can us it for the nuvi 500 then transfer it to the nuvi 200. I have loaded a couple of topo maps from this site directly onto that card although the 200 is primarly used in my truck.

General Discussion / PA Hiking Trails
January 14, 2010, 04:46:49 PM

I found this site for downloading GPX files. for Pennsylvania hiking trails. I saw somewhere on this site somebody looking for trails to load. I am not sure if these can be sent to a gps or not.

GPSr Units / Re: New user nuvi 550 question

I have downloaded the PA planimetric topo and the WV topo onto mapsource from this site and sent them to a micro sd card in my nuvi 500 and as long as that map is selected it works great. I have read somewhere that any maps loaded should be through the card and not onto the internal memory. I believe I read this in manual thatcame with the unit. The new units have alot of internal memory so I'm not sure why they claim it is better to use a card.

Sorry ab the original reply. Did you send the topo to MapSource first?

Dad the topo onto MapSource first? If not that is what you need to do then I would get a micro SD card then send it from mapsource to the sd card in your nuvi 550.

Yes you ll need mapsource on your computer and the maps should be loaded onto there first the sent to you GPSr or better yet an SD or micro SD card, whatever your GPS takes. Follow the tutorials on this site to get mapsource or you could try Garmins BaseCamp. I have been playing around with that lately and seems to work just as well. Ypu can get BaseCamp right from the garmin website and does not cast anything.

Thank you very much. That worked just like you said, I don't understand why I didn't notice that before, ignorance I guess, but thank you again! :)

What exactly do you mean by adjusting the detail? What would you have to change on BaseCamp to adjust any detail?

I just loaded BaseCamp onto my computer and sent the PA planimetric and WV topo to it. It worked but it looks like just a bunch county lines and chopped up roads and does not look anything like a topo maps that I have on Mapsource. Is this the way it looks and changes when it is sent to the GPS or is something not right?

The 500 micro SD is inserted in the battery compartment. (Because this unit is supposed to be water proof) As far as my 200 it has a slot on the side for a regular SD card. But that is interesting, are all the new garmin models all micro SD cards now?

I think that model uses the regular card. (look for the open slot on the side of the unit) other than that check out your owners manual and if you don't have one you can get one from the garmin website.

The new gps's are amazing. I can get a good signal from inside my house. Also, I don't mount my older nuvi on the dashboard I keep it next to me on the seat and get a great signal. As far as the topo goes, my nuvi 500 displays the topo in walking or bycycle mode and the street map in driving or motorcylcle mode.

Is there a special SD card that the Nuvi's use or will anyone work? I have a Nuvi 255W.

No, All nuvi models use either the SD or micro SD card. I have the nuvi 200 that uses the regular sandisk SD card and my nuvi 500 uses a micro SD card. All maps I have loaded from this site have been put into mapsource then sent to the sd card in the gps unit.

I also have a 500 but have not tried to download that particular map. Every map that I istalled from here work fine but have a few questions.
1: Did you load it to mapsource first?

2: If you did this first step did you try to load it straight to the units memory or to a seperate micro SD card?

I have found if you load it to the micro SD card ( which is recomended ) it could be removed and the original topo that came with the unit can be used again. This GPS works great for ATV riding and just walking around the woods but also works just as great in the vehicle also.
