Actually, the G-Raster program has native support for the NOAA BSB file format. So your mission is even simpler:
1) download the charts you want from NOAA in the NOAA BSB native format
2) Use G-Raster to convert them to KMZ

I don't know how it is out west, but I always check http://www.openstreetmap.org as an additional source of trails and roads. There are a bunch of automated, semi-automated, and manual methods on the internet to convert openstreetmap to img files for GPSr.

There is an expanded set of junction view maps available, better than the default that ships with most devices.

Yes, they are all shown, and this is where draw order becomes important. The KMZ with the higher draw order will show on top of the lower draw order KMZ, completely obscuring it. I have a number of examples in my collection of KMZ maps. See the explanation for "Bay Circuit "E to K" KMZ Series" in this map:

But it is correct, all the KMZ files that are loaded on the GPSr are enabled or disabled as a group, and you can't individually select them on the GPSr.

I have had the same problem occasionally. All you need to do is EDIT your page and add the [DOWNLOAD] text again. Then it will work.

It seems to me that the only sequence that works is:
1) create the map page
2) upload the map
3) go back and edit the map page to add the [DOWNLOAD] text
4) Save and everything works.

Somehow if you put the [DOWNLOAD] text in when doing step 1 above, it gets deleted when you do step 2.

I was looking at an area with a lot of trails but no PDF/JPG or any kind of trail map that I could find anywhere to use to make a KMZ (custom map). I was able to find the trails I wanted on openstreetmap.org, so I started poking around to see if there was a way to get those onto my GPSr. The solution was amazing:

1) go to http://www.osmmaps.com/
2) download the IMG / zip file - took 3 hours, so I let it run overnight
3) Unzip the IMG file - for me, the US file was / is 3.5 GB (yes, gigabytes)
4) rename the IMG file (since my Garmin GPS supports multiple IMG files)
5) copy the IMG file to the "\garmin" folder on the SD card in my GPS
6) "Enable" the OSM map on the GPS
7) At this point, I couldn't see the trails on my GPSr that I could see on the openstreetmap.org website. I figured I was out of luck...but...
So this step may only apply to my GPS (GPSMAP 62/78 series), but perhaps there are similar steps for other Garmin GPSr: go to SETUP MAP, ADVANCED MAP SETUP, DETAIL, select MOST, and bingo! I now have the entire US version of openstreetmap.org on my GPSr, including all the trails you can see on that website. Absolutely amazing.

Caveats:
This IMG file is not transparent, so I can't see any other IMG files at the same time. I could probably figure out how to fix that, but I haven't yet.
This IMG file has no topo contours (and since it isn't transparent, I can't see the contours from my other IMG file, even with both of them enabled).

Openstreetmap.org doesn't have as much trail detail as some of the PDF/JPG trail maps that I have found, so I'm not going to give up on my KMZ collection. [But I was pleasantly relieved to see that most of the OSM trails match the location of the trails on my KMZ maps!] So as another source of trail information, it is great. And it was simple to get onto my GPSr.

Goofing around on forums reading about custom maps, and I reverse engineered a link and was surprised to see this folder allows listing of contents:

You can download all of the KMZ files that Garmin has created directly from that link. I checked out a couple and they are pretty nice.

It is much easier to go directly to that link / folder than drill through all the forum postings in the forum below to find the same maps...

I just tried to upload my first 'hosted images' but they are not appearing. Did the image hosting get disabled as a result of the rr.nu hack (see downtime thread)?

However the backdoor still seems to be there which means the exploit is loaded in real time at the host.

Yes, it appears that the link to the *.rr.nu script is loaded dynamically. That is why the subdomain (part of the web address before .rr.nu) is always different. I also wonder if that is why the redirect only happens sometimes - I wonder if sometimes, the dynamically loaded script is actually broken, so it doesn't redirect. That could explain the random / intermittent nature of the redirect that some people experience.

Oz, have you engaged / contacted your webhost? This is clearly at least somewhat their problem, not necessarily yours. What say they?

P.S. For me, Google Chrome (on Windows 7) appears to work OK, even with my anti-virus turned off. You may want to try that to access the site without problems. Deleting history, temp files, etc. probably won't fix the problem for you if you are having the redirect problem (since the problem really isn't on your computer), but either using a different browser or updating your anti-virus (so that it can block the script from running) might help.

Another work around that worked for me is to put "gpsfiledepot.com" in your 'restricted sites' list in Internet Explorer. Then IE will block the script from running and IE will access the site without the redirect. You might not be able to download or upload files with gpsfiledepot in your restricted sites list, but at least you would be able to get to this forum to find out when the problem gets fixed.

Yes, I did a little searching and the problem is definitely the rr.nu script. There is a known malware / virus infection that inserts script references to random *.rr.nu pages at the bottom of HTML pages of infected websites / web servers. The script creates a redirect via browser security holes - exactly the problem we're seeing here. I'm not sure if this is a problem that falls to Oz to fix or to his webhost.

The reason that not all of us see the problem is that the problem can be blocked with up-to-date browser updates (like Microsoft security patches) and up-to-date anti-virus software. Perhaps the exploit only works on certain browsers, also.

Bottom line, the problem is on this website, not your machine - unless when the script runs  it infects your machine with a virus...that could be possible.

When I load this page (this thread in the forum), my anti-virus blocks a script from running. Looking at the source code for this page, the script is at the very bottom of the HTML for this page. The script that my anti-virus doesn't like is:
ligen92tcusto.rr.nu/nl.php?p=d

Could this be the source of your problem? Is there a purpose to that script being called from this page? Anyone want to go hunting and try to figure out if that script is really bad or if my anti-virus software is just over-reacting?

BTW, I never get redirected and never have had trouble loading the forum or the main part of the site.
