Title: Maximum number of Map Segments for Garmin eTrex Legend HCx
Post by: happycycler on January 19, 2010, 05:46:53 PM
Could someone tell me the maximum number of map segments for a 4GB micro SD card in a Garmin Legend HCx?  I have seen 2025, 2500 and the Oregon has 4000?  Am I limited to 2025 map segments for my eTrex Legend HCx? -- happycycler

Yes, the GPSMap and eTrex series have a 2025 segment limit. This is completely unrelated to map file size. The largest allowable map file is 4GB. However it is unlikely you will ever reach that file size before exhausting the 2025 segment limit.

For example, US Topo 100k has 6600 segments and is only about 3GB total. So you would run out of segments after loading about 1GB of that map. Segment size is up to the map maker, however Garmin and others have traditionally used fairly small segments to maintain compatibility with older units that only have 8MB or less memory.

The Oregon, Colorado and Dakota can handle 4,000 segments.
