I'm new here, mostly because it didn't seem possible to use the maps here without a windows or mac computer. I use a linux desktop and have installed quite a few open source maps on my GPS in the gmapsupp.img format. I have a mac on my lap now so I just installed my 1st map from here. I'm wondering why the dependence on the PC and mac tools when the map files could be in .img format. It's trivial to install these on the GPS from any OS.

Whatever. I have moved beyond Garmin, doubt that I will make any more maps in their proprietary format. I am concentrating on raster imagery that is compatible with just about every device. I distribute the map as a file that can be opened with Mobile Atlas Creator. It runs on MacOSX, Windows and Linux. And after installing a map, you can then export for iOS and Android apps, Garmin handheld devices and even platforms like Windows mobile and Symbian.. http://mobac.sourceforge.net

I started converting over but it seems like it really wants to load it to its directory on the C:\ drive which really is silly in the days of small SSDs for the OS and large hard drives for data (and yes, maps are data).
You can put maps on other drive and use symbolic links, look for info about mklink command.
All that it requires (in Windows anyway) is a shortcut in Garmin's default map directory to the actual location and Basecamp will find the map.

Yes I definitely can... but can everyone else (or are you saying build it into the installer)?
There is actually an install script already in existence to work with the gmap; I thought I posted it somewhere before but perhaps it deserves another look.

I offer a batch for installing my maps on Windows. It is included in archive with the map. When executed, batch creates a proper link to gmap.
