My wife has Windows 7 64 bit, and the newest mapsource, and usually she has no problems.  We use her laptop with n-route for trips, and mapsource to see ahead, and just finished a 4500 mile trip.  She only had 2 problems, when changing maps, once everything went blank, and one it panned to very far out, and wouldn't come closer.  Both times she closed and restarted the program and it worked.  She had been having problems before she downloaded the newest one tho.

I had the same luck wit ok map, even after e-mailing for more info.  But I have trouble figuring out simple things a lot of times with the computer.  It sounded great.  I've been trying to figure out some simple mapping on something.  Downloaded a bunch of programs recommended here but overwhelmed myself.  The same time I was trying to figure ok map.

Just a thought as I have seen similar threads before, but can you load 2 maps on n-route?

That explains my trouble getting the maps installed.  It says it works with Garmin receivers, and mapsource, and a friend told me I could use my Garmin maps, but in the about 1 hr a night I have to be on the computer at night, when internet is real busy, and the user manual online, I have not figured out much yet.  Weekends I can do more on the computer.  I was trying to help ParaBellum have as good of luck as I had with n-route and was told this would do pretty much the same thing.  You and others here helped me use it.  I had not looked for img files as a supported format.  Sorry.  Babel says it works with 11 different Garmin things.  including mapsource txt and mps which I thought was mapsource itself, gdp , SML, POI, et al.  Okmap says it works with what babel works with.  I realize now, that img files were not listed and that's what Garmin uses.  And I can't get them converted to okm files to use.  Therefore you must be right, too bad tho as I thought this had a lot of potential.

About a year ago I was trying to do the same thing, I think.  If you are going to have a companion, n-route used to work very well.  There is a lot of information in a post on page 2 (I just looked it up, and man it's had a lot of people looking at it.) called  Running GPS with laptop  may have some usable information for you.  However the newer maps don't seem to work with n-route anymore.  OSM maps will give your companion 5 minutes or so to see roads coming up and route you.  You can only have one file of OSM maps on mapsource at a time tho.  My wife was very good at looking at her laptop and telling me where to go.  Doesn't even need her laptop sometimes.   We did have some problems with 7, or windows 7, operating system with it.   Also I just found OkMap  @http://www.okmap.org  yesterday which is supposed to do about the same thing as n-route, and maybe more.  You are supposed to be able to use it with google earth or google maps, both of which seem to work ok.  Or with the maps in mapsource, or a lot of others.  I have not figured out how to use those maps yet.  I am awfully computer illiterate, but in time I hope to.  These great people on here have been a big help to me, and I hope I have helped you.  You do need a navigator to watch the screen for you the way I did it.  I'm not sure if you could use OkMap with City Navigator or other routables either, as I'm still pulling out what little hair I have left and wondering how to install maps and do other things on it yet.  Good luck  Oh you will also need a GPSR

I didn't know my GPSR had an averaging function.  I have an old 76CS which I bought for fishing trips and keep finding more uses.  The furthest off I ever was was only 1 number north/south and 1 number east/west.  When I returned home, after getting all the waypoints, I put them on the easy gps program.  Enlarged the file to the 2 foot level, and picked a spot right in the middle, copied the coordinates and used them.   Then I searched with the GPSR for the spot.    they were within 2 feet or less.   With my original coordinates, I had 18 of the 21 identical.  1 was one number off east and west, 1 was off both 1 east and west, and north and south, and the third I could only get 1 reading in the dense canopy.  All waypoints were shot on 3 different days.  When I plotted them, and then searched for the mark on the ground, the furthest off was  2 feet.  This was done on the third day.  Then I walked 50 or so feet away and searched again, and then a third time.  I am not moving any fence lines (at least yet, I don't figure to anyway).  The surveyor my parents and a neighbor hired didn't have any square corners and none of the quarter miles were the right distance.  I will have to look into the averaging feature this winter since I can't (don't want to with all the snow) finish now.

I guess I didn't do my homework when I posted my surveying thread just a couple after here.   I shot my waypoints at least 3 times, most of them came to the same coordinates, averaged any different, and followed the directions back to them.  I was within 2 feet on every one I got good satellite readings on.  I realize there is still a margin of error.  I'm doing 146 acres for family and my neighbors are curious about the way it turns out, as every surveyor who comes along gets different results.  I used Easy gps , a free download, entered waypoints, figured distances and directions (it will do that for you) came up with where I felt the interior corners should be.  I checked with a brother and 2 sister-in-laws who live nearby and they agreed.  But now I've got 2+ feet of snow so I want to wait to go back and find the new coordinates.  I have 1 family boundary corner that I haven't been able to get a good reading on because of the tree canopy.  Hardest one to get to too.  Two of my neighbors want to see my results and maybe do the same thing.  If I know them it'll be me doing theirs but they are agreeable and nothing is going to be moved unless everyone agrees.  Putting it over Google Earth allows you to see some things, and the easy gps program was a big help.  You can figure square feet and http://www.convertunits.com/from/square+feet/to/acre you can figure the acres.  It's time consuming but worked good for me.  The gpsr can lead you right to where the coordinates should be.  I'd check 3 or 4 times and average tho.  I can't see far on most of mine either, nor can I walk thru big trees.

I might try that globalmapper.  The state's GIS map for the northern tip of Idaho had been down since last spring.  My 2 brothers and sister-in-law still alive are in our 60's and 70's.  We get along good.  Next generation not near as much.  Our parents (mother especially) wanted their original 160 acres to stay in the family forever (not much chance).  First generation agreed to keep it in the family, but not always possible.  Surveyor took my parents and a neighbor who paid for the survey for the same reason in their family(subdividing for family).  We (my siblings) would like to refind the corners and get them as close as possible without spending too much money.  In Idaho if something is used as a boundary for 7 yrs it is considered legal and a new survey won't change it.  I would like to find the coordinates as much as possible over the next couple of years to straighten things out.  I know my handheld is + or - 5 meters, and some corners are in heavy timber, but before it was 2 handheld compasses and 4 50 ft tapes that measured things.  I have 40 acres with 16 waypoints on all but 4 corners.  I've been told the more satellites you recieve the more accurate you are, and I've had 5 or more on 14 of the 16 I got.  Shot the ones in heavy timber 3 or 4 times and on all but one had at least 2 the same.  Only 106 acres to go after that.  2 of the 3   1/8 mile lines are pretty straight. the second (middle) one is not.  I can convert the coordinates to distance with a program mentioned above, and can place them on a map.  I would like to see how the front waypoints correspond with section lines, as they should fall right on them.  The third row should do the same with the quarter line.  That was marked with a surveyor who was supposed to be licensed and bonded but wasn't.  If I can get a good map downloaded with section lines on I should be able to improve things.  I had some maps located, and saved the web sites, but can't remember just what I had to click to get to them.  Forrest Service maps used to always have them.  I figure I forget something simple, and someone here would give me a quick reply.  My experiences here have always been very good.   Thanks for the help.

My folks did hire a professional surveyor, it's a long story.  I was sort of looking for maps either for mapsource or just on the computer, as my 76cs has such a small screen.  I thought I could use EarthExplorer, but can't seem to get section lines on it.  Tried several GIS sites, but I'm missing something on getting the section lines.  Probably just the right command to push on the screen.  I don't think you can use a transparency on mapsource and see the areas of the map.  I think I read that anyway, and have only pursued it briefly.  I guess I'll quit being so lazy and go back to trying to understand and find things on some state sites.  Thanks for your help.

This should probably be in the mapping stuff, but I'll put it here anyways.  I have been mostly reading and using free stuff from on here.  Trying to learn (actually it's the remembering part that's hardest).  There was a topic awhile back on drawing boundary lines with waypoints.  http://forums.gpsfiledepot.com/index.php/topic,1130.msg7290.html#msg7290  .  Is there a place I can get the maps with section lines on that will enlarge enough to really be able to see easily?  My parents divided land between their kids, my siblings over 20 years ago.  About 28 acres each as they kept some also.  Parents have died, some siblings have died and the others decided we needed to get this settled while we all get along.  The lines have never really been mapped to scale, and I'm sure the corners aren't that accurate as we as laymen used compass and tapes to measure 150 acres.  I've marked the corners on the  bottom 40, and now want to see how far off they actually are.  http://www.csgnetwork.com/gpsdistcalc.html  is supposed to help me find distances between coordinates.  I have seen maps with section lines on them, but can't find them now.  Any help would really be appreciated.  Or if you could help find distances easier , or where the corners should be, coordinate wise.   I know you guys have been real good on other things for me.

I had no problem downloading NW topo a couple days ago on a computer where I work.  I haven't had time to look at it yet tho, and the disk I put it on is still at work.  Do you have a problem with downloading other things on your computer?  It could be a problem with the security settings on your computer.  In my experience most teens or preteens can change them in a hurry.  Or when the internet is real busy I have problems as everything seems to go slow on both ends.  Some times of day seem to work better, that's why I (my boss actually) downloaded it at work.  I'm pretty computer illiterate, but I know they download on other machines.

N route did work with OSM maps tho, If you were looking for street directions while traveling.  I've been looking into USGS maps, and I registered with TerraGo, and a couple other free sites (seamless.usgs.gov, national map.gov, USGS store, and others) are usable with an adobe plug in as explained earlier. But I haven't had time to do much this summer.  Kokanee are pretty much thru for the year as they have spawned so now you'd be catching next years fish so I may have time when I get caught up at home to play some more with the gps.  It worked good on the lakes, that's what I actually bought it for.  The  n route was a blessing on my trip.  The screen on my wife's laptop was big enough we only got lost once and quickly found the problem and corrected it after stopping in a parking lot.  Google Earth needs a hook up to internet to do anything with it, and we didn't find enough on the road to make it even slightly plausible.
My one little question, with a lot of help from the people here  seems to have drawn a lot of attention, and I hope helped a lot of people.  Thanks again to Boyd, Oz, maps4gps, seldom and all the others who helped me.

General Discussion / Re: Lost of signal occurances?

Not sure of your definition of modern, but my GPSmap 76 CS will lose signal and then in a few seconds regain it on a freeway, in a boat on an open lake, on a tractor in the middle of a field,or going thru the timber on a four wheeler.  Unless I'm in real dense timber or under a metal roof (the tractor if I'm not careful) it always comes right back.  I have friends with GPSmap60, nuvi, and the new radio, can't remember what they are, and they all do that.

OK, thanks Seldom-sn I guess we'll try re downloading and installing mapsource 6.16.1.  Or after rereading your post maybe we need an older n-route.  I'm not sure what the CNNANT means, but we have n-route 2.7.6 .

Since this post is back up near the top, I'll add this here.  After installing the new mapsource about 3 weeks ago, N-route wouldn't open.  My wife reinstalled it, and still nothin.  So she redownloaded it and we tried using it on a fishing trip to NW Montana last week end.  We've come to believe the new mapsource won't accept it.  Has anybody else experienced this? Everything else works ok tho.  Since I learned about n-route in this thread, I thought might be appropriate to ask this here.  Oh, the wife and I came back with 127 Kokanee Salmon and 1  14 inch Rainbow trout.  Wasn't too bad of a day and a half of fishing.
