Map Making Support / shape file boundries
March 11, 2009, 08:30:46 AM
I finally found a shape file for Washington which contains all the federal, state and county park boundaries, fish hatcheries and other interesting places.
When opening the file it always wants to open with these settings:
    *Left bounding coordinate: 600543.040949
    *Right bounding coordinate: 2550026.727108
    *Top bounding coordinate: 1355594.745190
    *Bottom bounding coordinate: 83579.754549
I of course can not change them. I can open the file and have a normal view in global mapper  but in map edit it opens in this huge square as if looking thousands of miles out. Any ideas of how to open in map edit? I would be able to open as parks that way.
I opened it in Global mapper and saved as mp but that mp is going to require a huge amount of editing in map edit.
Thanks

fixed thanks for the help.

Interesting thing now. I did as stated just ran the install now it comes up again with the Map source warning there is a problem with the map and to correct it (of couse map source does not open) when I open map set tools it has everything but FID as 360, FID is listed as 3601. If I try to edit as before it will not let me, stating FID 360 already exists (which it did before). Maybe it will work correctly on another machine and not mine because I had the family already?

Thanks for the help. Oz your right its keeps saying the FID is 3265.
Thanks again.

Map Making Support / registry error with installer
March 09, 2009, 07:50:07 AM
I created a installer but am running into problems. For some reason its creating a different family ID.
The installer lines are:
  !define MAP_ID              C10C             ; Family ID = 360 (dec) = 0168 (hex) = 6801 (hex flipped) --> http://www.geocities.com/binary_converter/
;  !define MAP_TYPE            11224          ; only if using custom types
  !define DIRECTORY           "C:\washington\"
  !define EXE_FILE            "${DIRECTORY}nw-wa_install.exe"
The family id created is a completely different. If I manually correct it things open on map source correctly. Do I need to remove the ; and assign a custom MAP_TYPE to correct this?
Thanks

Map Making Support / Re: map id
February 16, 2009, 06:41:07 PM
Well I have changed a tad. I decided that since I was creating the maps as available as a quad, the state broken in quarters, half and full, I started doing them. Things are looking good at this point. Question is does this site want them broken into such a method or just the whole state?
I could just host the smaller maps myself.

Thank you again. I actually now am thinking I'll just keep compiling data for the rest of the state. Its over 2 gigs for just the North West corner (122* west and 47.30 N bounds) I am going to get a new computer in a couple weeks seems like it would be far faster with a newer machine which of course not only has more memory but faster cpu (mine is only 2.4 ghz)
Thanks agin for the help. This maps have turned out quite complete, I think the info from this forum is to be credited.

Thank you, so there for the id in the properties need to match each (ie you can not re-name after the convert) set of 8 which are the final .img file.
I fear this is going to take some time to run so I want it to run correctly the first time.
Thanks again for your time.

Map Making Support / map id

I have a batch of quads ready to finish as .img files the really large ones are split into smaller bites. My question is does each map need a unique id and name? Thanks

Map Making Support / Re: Topo Process Program (BETA!)

Hmm, trying to figure this part out. The mount Olympus area is over 1 gig in a 20  foot contour. I need to split it to make it into the image file, smaller ones combined later. I have determined with my computer and via information from Stan I need to keep my file size to about 115 megs (he has a newer version coming which hasn't the memory issues).
I was thinking I would be able to take a bunch of .img files use maptoolset to create 1 complete .img of them all. Maybe it does not work that way.
I still have not figured out how to precisely split a quad either. But I can say this much the quads look good so far.

The contour thing was a mistype on my part. I see the error. How do the 100 quad's get combined?

So I may have made a error (again) I just finished another set of contours but did not check the combine the contours box because the computer was going to process some images I intended to take tonight. But its cloudy, soooo now I have a bunch of shape files of which do not have the contours separated (ie: 20, 100, 200 and so forth) if I try to open them in GPS Mapper it asks of course what contour they are. Of course I do not want to choose 1 if it hase them all. Is they a way to combine post process for dummies like me?
I was also wondering also would it no be a good idea to offer the contours as a transparent map which could be turned off and on at will.

Map Making Support / golf courses
January 31, 2009, 09:43:05 AM
I am still here. Any one know where I can get data that shows all the golf courses in Washington state? Now that I have been using Global mapper things are running quite smoothly. I want to ad more details to my final. Which I intend to run on Sunday if I get all the little things I am looking for.
Thanks-

I am wondering I if I see this correct. I opened my state/county base and set the levels as suggested. Made sure the dictionary was included, not altered. Then added the salt water .mp, then added fresh water .mp, then added transport .mp (this version is not to have contours). At level 0 everything is visible, at level 1, I only see the county lines and pacific ocean, lost the inner water channels (maybe should be one water file). At level 3 there is nothing same with 4. I am still using gpsmapedit even though I now have global mapper, I am just not familiar with the later.

Ok, I'll go back to the base and start over. Interesting thing is when you look at each level you see nothing unless you are at level 0.
Back at it in the morning, Thanks!
