Title: Wisconsin 24k Topo POI's
Post by: cerka_trova on April 01, 2010, 07:11:51 AM
Hi There,

I just recently purchased the Garmin 450 and installed the Wisconsin 24k Topo map.  I'm having trouble viewing the POI's, though.  When viewing the map in mapsource I'm able to see some street names, POI's, parks, etc.  However, when the map is loaded into the GPS unit, I am unable to see them.  I've zoomed from 500ft down to 20ft, and still no dice.  I've also changed the setting for the zoom level where the POI's and road names appear, from auto to everything from 500ft down to 20ft without any luck.

Am I supposed to load these PO's seperately or adjust another setting?

Cheers

To lessen the clutter and workaround a fault in Garmin's display of names/labels with mixed caps and small letters (and also issues with all caps), I tried to keep the number of names/labels showning to a minimum.  Names/labels will display when you place the pointer on the feature.

Since purchasing an Oregon 300 last November, I have noticed many differences in the manner in which map features are displayed on it versus the 76CSX which I used for development and testing of the mapsets.  My future mapsets will be 'tweaked' for these newer units.

If you do not need the contours lines; try my US Planimetric north central - the road/street data are a year newer (Census 2009).

Thanks for the reply, and thanks for making the map!  I'm glad that I know that I'm not going crazy when I didn't see the POI's, ha!  I will certainly check out the US Planimetric when I get the chance.

May I ask, where did you acquire your data for the POI's you used for creating the Wisconsin 24k topo map?  If I were to load it as custom POI's via Garmin's POI loader, would it be more or less the same?

Cheers

You should see the POIs (but not their names/labels).  The icons for the POI's start appearing on on my OR300 at the 0.8mi zoom (which is a few zooms further out than on the 76csx).
setup / map / advanced map ... / detail is normal
  "                              "              / zoom levels .... / all 4 set to auto    -  map points = POI's ??

The POI's are the USGS GNIS (geographic names information system) data.
http://geonames.usgs.gov/domestic/download_data.htm

They periodically update the 'canned' files.  I have made a few modifications and enhancements and not included some types as political units.

I started map authoring by converting the GNIS to POIs and using Garmin's POI loader.  Added waterfalls, glaciers, mountains, etc. as we started with just the built-in map.  Never got to making custom icons.

Awesome info.  I just downloaded the GNIS info for Wisconsin, and it looks great.  I haven't  downloaded POI Loader yet, but I'm assuming that it is capable of converting the .txt file the GNIS points come in as to .gpx or .csv.

I'll have to check when I'm by my GPS this evening, but I don't recall seeing the POI markers or the text labels when panning around.  I will make sure I'm using the settings you have listed there and try it again tonight.

Cheers

I do not remenber what the required format was.  You may need to use: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tools/gnistogpx.php    or
http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tools/gnis_process.php

If either encounters a problem, it will likely be because USGS changed the file structure - again.

There have been a number of posts on the groundspeake forums the past few hours about labels/names not showning.  Seems this is being caused by Garmin's software/firmware updates to support their Birdseye imagery.  Those who returned to a previous version found the labels/names returned.

Is there a column sequence published for either of those PHPs?
If so, you can always use Excel to re-order the columns.

Field information is on the USGS GNIS site; however, sometimes they make changes to the files without updating this file.
