GPSr Units / Best road GPS
April 04, 2010, 08:16:51 PM
Hey, my mother is taking some of my nieces and nephews cross-country to visit sites and families. She asked me for advice on a good car GPS, but I know only about handhelds. She likes cheaper, but tried and trued products. She doesn't care about all the new bells and whistles as long as it is easy to use and reliable. The best thing I have found so far is the Garmin Nuvi 1350 for $169 at Best Buy. Any suggestions?

Map Making Support / Map of Australia
March 18, 2010, 08:35:47 AM
Maybe I am not looking well enough, but I can't seem to find any topographical maps of Australia. Is there a reason for this? I would like to have one, since I hope to go there soon. Any word on this map makers?

Map Making Support / satellite map overlay for 60csx
January 28, 2010, 01:57:06 PM
I don't know if this has been discussed before, and sorry if it has - Has anyone made or know of satellite overlays that can work on a 60csx? If any of you have used it, is it any good? I am curious to know how useful this would be.

I have snow leopard, and use roadtrip (mac equivalent to mapsource) and I was wondering what the point of basecamp is? I know it is used for topo maps you buy that have DEM shading for units like the Oregon, or others. I have a gpsmap 60csx, and I use the amazingly sweet and free topos here. Can the free ones here even be used on basecamp? is the only benefit the DEM shading (since gpsmap 60csx can't see it anyways) am I completely wrong is is there no real point to basecamp?

P.S. sorry if there is a similar thread I missed somewhere.

General Discussion / Topo maps Rock
June 06, 2009, 09:17:16 PM
I just finished my Spring Summit trip (a five week long outdoor trip for twelve credits at Brigham Young University Idaho), and I have to say that I love the maps. We were on a survival course with Dave Holiday and couldn't find where the water stash was (Dave wasn't the one who hid it or he would have found it easy), but the topo maps helped show our location, since we were already off our paper map, and we were able to get on the right track after going 12 miles off course.

I have to say though that I found the state specific maps more accurate than the northwest/southwest topos. Those were as much as 20-40ft off the actual elevation whereas the Utah topo only varied 1-2ft. I don't know if the information was gathered from different places, but I sure liked the Utah topo. Good job guys.

I have a 2GB micro SD card with City navigator 2009 on it. It does not say Garmin, but I am guessing it is from garmin since it is so difficult to copy the map onto other cards. I was wondering if it will erase my map when I put some topo maps on it. When I put maps on my GPS it will usually erase my old maps on the card that are not highlighted, and I would hate for it to erase my city navigator.

Map Making Support / Contour differences
April 14, 2009, 11:09:42 PM
As I have been using the topos from this site (all of them amazing, and very difficult to create), I have noticed some differences. In the Northwest and southwest topos, the contour lines are anywhere from two to 9 feet off of real elevation (to find this I make a waypoint on a contour line and then view it in google earth). When I do the same with the individual state topos, they have all been spot on, with the exception of one time when it was a foot off. I was wondering where each of them got there contour lines, and how they got off from each other. More of a curiosity question really.

GPSr Units / City navigator NT micro SD card
April 10, 2009, 07:27:33 PM
I just bought a garmin gpsmap 60cs from someone today. It came with a 2 gb micro SD of city navigator NT 2009. It works great on the gps, and I think it is an original SD from Garmin since they are nigh impossible to copy over. What I wanted to know is if there is a way to unlock the map from my SD card onto mapsource. It would be junky not to be able to use mapsource for city navigator.

Map Making Support / NW/MW conflict
April 06, 2009, 11:06:59 PM
He John M., I think you kept the same ID number for MW as you have for NW, or else something is causing them not to work together like NW and SW topo use to be. I was wondering if that was fixable at all. Thanks.

General Discussion / Summit POI's
April 06, 2009, 10:32:45 AM
Is there a place that I could find summit point of interests that I could load with the POI loader. It would be nice to get summit POI's for the entire US, but Idaho and Utah could do.

Map Making Support / Attn. John M.
March 25, 2009, 10:06:36 AM
Hey John, I am told you made the NW and SW Topo maps. I posted a message, regarding this, earlier, but have not received any solutions yet. When I download NW topo, it works in mapsource, but when I install SW topo, it never shows up. If I remove (uninstall) NW topo, SW shows up. They basically won't work together. It was suggested that the ID tags may have been the same for both maps. I was wondering if this could be fixed. Forgive me my persistance, but I am going on a long trip soon, and using both of these maps on mapsource would be quite invaluable. If you or anyone could help I would appreciate it.

These maps are the best. I bought garmin topo and am selling it because I find these better. If anyone wants to buy TOPO US 2008, I have one for sale.

Map Making Support / Map conflicts
March 23, 2009, 10:07:22 AM
I am trying to figure this out - sorry I am new. I downloaded NW USA TOPO map, and it came up on my mapsource just fine. Then I got SW USA TOPO, but it doesn't show up. When I uninstall NW USA TOPO then SW USA TOPO shows up in mapsource, but then if I reinstall NW USA TOPO, SW USA TOPO disapears again. Any advice on how to get the to from conflicting in mapsource?
