Well, here's what finally solved the download problems. Start downloading with no other programs running. If you are unsuccessful choosing to "Run" the program, in other words it doesn't download properly, then try "Save" to "Programs (86X) folder on your computer. If there is a separate installer indicated for the download, remember you have to go to the downloaded folder and open it and use the installer file. The most important part of the solution to my problem(s) was to restart my computer after each download--before trying to downloand another map.

Thanks everyone for the help. I have no idea why it worked this way.

Marshall

Those sample file names are correct as they appear in the Fl Topo folder on my laptop

I didn't try loading the My Trails in MapSource--I was so pleased they were there. I will do it now.......Now My Trails doesn't show in Mapsource. I checked the folder and the files, like 00000124 don't have extensions--don't know if this is a (the) problem.  So frustraing!!

jbensman, I think you've missed an important detail. The OP has tried to install the same GPSFileDepot maps on TWO DIFFERENT COMPUTERS. They work as expected on Vista and MSTK lists all the maps, including City Navigator. But on his Win 7 64 machine, the installer has not worked correctly and neither mapsource nor MSTK show any maps other than the real Garmin City Navigator.

THE ABOVE IS CORRECT.

In response to all the comments so far, while you guys work on the "installer" and "registry" possibilities, I will try to install the "My Trails" map suggested by ibensman and try and check the registry on my new laptop for that doubling of part of the locational coding. I'l wait for using MapKit to upload via the .img files and the tutorial at GPSFileDepot until I here from yousss. Thanks again for your continued attention.

Just downloaded My Trails and it worked; it showed in MapSource. But==the files of My Trails had not extensions as apposed to the files for the FL topo: it had .img.idx files and next to each of the many was a file called "Disc Image File"  Hopefully this will be info that will help solve my downloading problem with this laptop for all the topos I've tried to download and have show in MapSource.

Forgive me. I installed the Kit on the new laptop; only CN shows as installed (FL Topo being the test and installed on the laptop. I mentioned that the Kit installed on my desktop shows all the installed maps I've downloaded to that PC.

Thanks for the comeback on New Year's day. in reply to the above: I've downloaded many topo maps from GPSFileDepot successfully on my desktop running W-Vista. I'm just using the Florida topo as a test here on my uncooperative laptop running W-7.

Installed MapSetToolKit. The only map showing is CN. MapSetToolKit on my desktop shows all the maps I've downloaded...

Thanks for staying with me GPS/Map troopers. Maybe the new year will help; but, alas it didn't seem to. I uninstalled all the maps with their uninstallers where they were located in My Programs (86), checked with control panel to make sure they were purged. Then I deleted MapSource the MapSource folder where it was stored in My Programs (86) in the Garmin folder--didn't have an uninstaller file. Checked Control Panel...Then went to Garmin and downloaded MapSource and then downloaded the Florida Topo from GPSFile Depot as a test. The FL map doesn't show in MapSource; only my City Navigator.

That's for the new laptop running W-7. I performed the same uninstall and reinstall on all, on my desktop running W-Vista--no problem. All the maps show in MapSource. Any bright ideas???

And, happy new year.

I guess I wasn't clear. Sorry. I've done all this. The only map showing in MapSource is City Navigator. I've uninstalled MapSource and all the topos I've downloaded from GPSFile Depot and reinstalled MapSource and then the topo maps. I've run the topos and saved to my PC and then installed... I've saved the topos and had them install with the auto installer. No luck. The Garmin site forums don't help.... Stuck.

Hello helpers. I've read relevant posts here on the subject and tried every combo suggested. I've now uninstalled the maps I've downloaded from GPSFile Depot and reinstalled only the FL topo. It installed in Programs 86 on my Windows 7 PC. Mapsource is the latest version and shows only City Navigagtor which I purchased from Garmin. No maps other maps show in View/Map Manager; there is no box with the arrow for selecting other maps on the upper left of MapSource.?? Helllllp!!

Bear with with. Are you advising to send a mapset from MapSouce to the GPS unit? Then how will I see the mapset's name ("gmapsupp.imp")? You're saying I can rename it in the unit??? I'm confused. Sorry. Give it another go, please.

GPSr Units / Oregon 450-back up files & Multiple maps
December 13, 2010, 10:22:03 AM
Hello, gurus.

Could someone educate me as to how I back up the files on this unit (maps and whateverelse that came with the unit)? And, is there any way to get more than one map (e.g. a topo or City Nav) into the unit. It seems inefficient to have to get to your computer every time you want to use a "map".

Thanks in advance.

So far after much experimenting, I've found that waypoints created in MapSource with a "map set" don't transfer to the unit. If I create waypoints with the base map on the unit and then view them in "Whereto" >"Waypoints", the waypoint selected goes to the "right" map not the base map??? Who's to know. I'll keep at it and report anything else of interest.

Okay. I got it all to work. Advice: (1) Save map downloads in the suggested folder in the pop up screens during downloading (you can only alter the name of the file that is saving in the pop up going to that location. (2) Download MapSource to your computer before you download GPS maps; they may not show in MapSource unless you do. (3) In MapSource go to "View" and make sure that "no map" is not checked in "Switch Product". (4) If you are sending map segments to your Garmin unit (mine is an Oregon 450), make sure you mark a "waypoint somewhere on those segments; my unit brings up the "base map" when I pull "Maps" up, so the only way to get to a map you want to use that's been transfered from MapSource and enabled on your unit is to go to the device menu and bring up "Waypoints". Then you can select the waypoint associated with the map you want and the device brings up the map.

Thanks for all your tips Heros and Sr. users that responded to my needs.

Hey, again. I looked through the files of GA Topo and no installer or .exe. The download process seemed to go smoothly. (The folder created, previously downloading SE Topo, contained an installer file that I used and then saved the produced files. Maps4gps comment: I think I must have "run/executed" the file during the download process, just responding to pop up screens to authorize phases of the download...But I made some progress: I uninstalled MapSource and reinstalled it from Garmin.com; that brought the GA Topo map on the MapSource screen. I then selected several sections of the map to transfer to my 450 (this is where my original problem began). The map appeared to load to the device (sent it to the 8GB card) visa vi Setup>enabled it and disabled the preloaded basemap. Nothing came up just the blue cone icon, and I could move the blank map; went to "Where to go" and went to Altanta and zoomed the blank map down and nothing...

Hi Boyd,

I uninstalled all downloaded maps on my computer (Control Panel;storage folders); I uninstalled all the maps off of MapSetTool and MapSource. Then I dis a disk clean and a Norton scan and repair and restarted my computer. I downloaded the GA Topo from GPSFileDepot (it doesn't have an installer file like SE US Topo). The map shows in MapSource Utility, "Manage Map Products" but not in the menu tab (no drop down window) at the top left on the main MapSource screen. Any suggestions now?...

Marshall
