Just wondering if Mapwel is worth the cost. I have found many nice raster based data layers for my state and am considering shelling out the cash for the full version of mapwel. One question does it except ArcGIS export files?

Okay I have a nice completed map with all the bells and whistles. zoom levels are great, everything shows up on the 60csx fine except it is off by about 1000' North and 500' All the datas have this paralax. When I loaded the shapefiles to compile I used the zandareji and daum it had by default. Is this causing the error? Everything is in proper spatial orientation to one another but the whole map is georeferenced wrong. Any ideas?

 

After much fiddling around I got it to process and display my first test quad. Now I have one small problem that should be easy to fix. It is only showing contours and NHD data at lowest zoom levels, while showing everything at higher levels, how do I get POI, Roads, land use, etc to extend down to the lower levels

Also it should be noted that generalize didn't cause my contours or water data to get off but did make the roads have some accuracy problems. I guess I will recompile the transport and trails separately and only generalize the DEM and NHD data.

Okay so I have a test set of maps I've compiled and converted to .img format. They look spot on in GPSmapedit but when I go to load them up in mapsource the program crashes at the 3 mile zoom and refuses to load onto the microsd card. Did notice when I looked again at the unconverted .mp files that under the verify map option the water data and federal lands says "polygon contour intersects with other polygon" is this the problem or is it a zoom issue. With the zoom levels from the header/dictonary file in the tutorial cGPSmapper wouldn't run saying that the zoom levels needed to be ascending. Where did I go wrong and is this why cGPSmapper ran so long on my maps?

I'm running CGPmapper to convert my first .mp to an .img file to test it out, it is the 30x60 min section around my house, Commerce GA quad to be exact. The mp file was around 303 mb I set it to run last night and has been running for the last 14 hours.... Is this normal?

....Says it has 160433 elements to process....

One other small thing I embeded the dictionary file in the borders before I trimmed it to fit the small quad and I had to change the zoom settings on the header to 0=0 1=1 2=2 etc b/c cgpsmapper wouldn't start converting saying that the zooms had to be ascending. They are ascending now 1-5 and everything looked good in gpsmapedit. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

My dem mp files are very large. I don't see how these maps are going to be broken down into anything close to a 8mb file. Does converting them to Img's compress them somehow? My elevation data alone for a 30x90 quad is sometimes as large as 600mb. Did I get to detailed of files off of the  seemless server?

I am assuming that it should be leaving an .mp file for every geotiff as long as it isn't checked to produce one file. I restarted the service and went to pgadminIII and found that all of the databases were x'd out. I typed in my password in the admin tool and it brought them up and allowed me to access them through admin. I am rerunning the contour function today while I am at work. It should be noted that I am seeing it build several files while the process is running but when it concludes there are only .prj files left.

Still not working properly, I am going to wipe both programs and start with a completely new install of postGIS and see if that corrects the issue.

Just ran the topo process beta to compile contours and it spat out one single very small prj file. Hard to believe that over 8gb of geotiffs could crunch down to less than 200 bytes. Is there some step I am missing or did it load the data to my postGIS? I did compile it all as one file, I still have the original DEMs do I need to recompile?

I have been able to find some hiking trails available as tracks for the garmin units, such as the AT and BMT. I suppose these were collected by actual hiking of the trails. Any ideas on how to imbed these tracks or routes into a topo map? We have a vast network of trails in the four states around me and I would love to include them in my map.

I am a newbie and would like to know about standards...
I am intending to start compiling a map for the southern appalachian mountains. I was not intending to bound the map within a specific state, instead wishing to follow the range from approx. anniston alabama to tazwell virginia. This would include parts of NC, GA, TN, AL, SC and VA but only a limited portion of each state. I have compiled a new spread sheet with the 40 DEM downloads needed to represent the topography from the usgs map locator and the spreadsheets provided here for the states.
The reason I'm looking to do it this way is to provide a reference for those interested in hiking and outdoor recreation in the southern mountains. I am not all that interested in having a topo map for the flatter areas. Will this approach work? I was intending to use the elevation data, hydrology data, points of interest, public lands, and trails if I can find them. I wasn't going to include roads as it seems a comprehensive nation wide road map is already compiled. Any hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
