Title: Garmin 255W and State & county overlay
Post by: capng on June 10, 2011, 08:06:29 PM
I've read the tutorial but a bit confused by the warning: WARNING: This software will not work unless you already own a MapSource product. I have downloaded the windows version of state & county lines. Guess I need to find out what about "Mapsource"  I want to use the state and county overlay wiith my existing maps. It does tell me that it will do that without overwriting any other maps.

I am runnning Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion G7.  I do have the mini usb - usb cable which recogn izes the Garmn Nuvi 255W

Not very wordly about stuff like this so would appreciate a couple of pointers on the "easy" way to get them on to the Garmin.

Thanks in advance "W"

I suggest that you ignore this tutorial because it's out of date: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-install-mapsource-if-it-didnt-come-with-your-gps/

Instead, simply download/install BaseCamp: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435 and then download/install Mapsource: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

You must do it in this order (Basecamp first, then Mapsource). Now you will not get that warning message and you will have both of Garmin's mapping programs installed. The old tutorial that references Training Center no longer makes any sense.

Boyd,  just caught this as I was checking in.  i tweaked the tutorial accordingly.  Anything else greatly out of date that I can fix from over here?
