I'll have to check the credit card receipt to see if it is covered.  Good idea.  And I have not called Garmin, but I will (email?).  I hope they will cover it since it is a PITA to have to use a tool to turn switch power on and off.  Oh yeah, this is the same with fresh or old batteries.

For some reason the power switch on my D20 (the ONLY switch  - sigh) seems to be really finicky.  Some days you have to  press it (using  a tool) in various sports until it tuerns on and other days it is fine.  Of course it is out of warranty and this is my prime season for it.  Anyone have any thoughts/ever seen this?

As long as they support Garmin Custom Maps it is east to DL images and georeference them to the base map.  I do this all the time by overlaying ski area maps onto the base map for my Dakota.

Bang on suggestion to go check them out in person.  One man's meat is another's poison is all I will say about reviews.  One good or bad review means squat IMHO.

I can say that for me, custom maps was vital as I use my Dakota for downhill snow skiing and want the trail maps embedded.  Size was important too since it needed to be easily pocketable.

And lastly, most vendors will ship cross border.  Even to North Carolina.

I was a  GPS newbie and bought the Dakota 20.  It was pretty simple to load the Ibycus topo maps onto my GPSr.  I did spend a couple hours doing though.  If it is all too much for you, buy a preloaded unit.  Or get a vendor to do it for you.  Or buy the preloaded SD card:  https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=28229

You rock!  And your lawyer deserved every penny.  He should have gone for fees at client-solicitor rates.  Sounds like they gave party-party rates.  I consult to governments all the time and abso-frigging-lutely astounds me what "civil" servants try to get away with.

latest firmware for the D20 now offers Image Viewer (like the Oregon) and also navigation to geotagged images.  Way cool! 

And for any one who read my post about using an  electronic boarding pass on their Dakota (or other GPSr) it is now a POC to do.

Bwa ha ha... the latest update to the Dakota supports not only Images (adds an Image Viewer button to the screen) but navigation to the geotagged photo!

And of course the image viewer is now my electronic boarding pass. 

   To be honest, I did this  a couple of weeks ago and the Photo Viewer was not released until the 16th!  Silly me, I forgot to see if there was a recent update before I posted.  There is as we now know!

And actually I followed Garmins instructions which involve basically pinning a JPG to a Google Earth map to create a kmz file.  So really only the boarding pass  goes onto the GPSr, not an entire map (via the .kmz coordinates I assume).

Once I find some freeware (any tips?) for  georeferencing a JPG, I'll try it that way.

As for photo navigation for geotagged photos, I dunno.  But I'm gonna find out! 

This is an electronic boarding pass - no different than the one on your Blackberry or HTC Android.  Unless things have changed in your part of the world, TSA allows eBPs.
