if i code them for "artificial path" will they still show up as visible lines?
What I meant was in the NHD that 'feature' is coded 55800 which means 'Artificial Path'.  I 'drop' them using GlobalMapper, but do not know what postgis allows.

There are about 66 feature types in the GNIS.  Some of them are not very useful.  None of them are a complete (nor up to date) inventory of the feature.

Those lines should be coded 55800 - Artificial Path.  They are used in water bodies to continue the path of flowlines (streams) so that the movement of water (and contaminants) can be modeled/predicted/traced.

They were 'panneled' from the 24Ks; which were pushed through as provisional versions so the 100Ks could be completed.

Sounds like the map was produced for fishing and hunting purposes.  Maybe the grocery store sold licences.  Contours on the 100K maps are mostly 10m with some 20m in the Berkshires - so this is not a detailed topo map.  I believe the ME/NH mapset is being extended southward to include all of New England.  Marine - have not seen any of that; I would expect most would stay away from it as some boater would likely sue for damages if they hit something not on the map; and NOAA issues biweekly notices to mariners on hazards, etc. so it would be nearly impossible to keep current.

... I think you need to fine tune this to the terrain to acheive the best results and make your map more distinctive.
I agree.  That is what I am trying to do.   I was using the CI on the 100K, dividing by 4, and converting to feet; but that does not give the usual foot intervals (40,20,10,5,2), so I adjust by visual inspection.  But I keep second guessing; and going more detailed than the 24K the NED/DEM was produced from is probably invalid.

That site is easier to use than the USGS site, however, with over 54,000 quads it still is not feasable.

dhisum_dhisum,
The section in Louisiana at the mouth of the Mississippi river the Hydrography would not compile.

That is an exceeding complex area of waterbodies and marshes.  I have terminated my compiles of 12minute quads in that area after 24hrs without producing a .img file.

Map Making Support / Topo Map Contour Interval

Does anyone have or know where to get a list of the contour intervals used on each of the USGS 24k topo maps?  I remember a file on one of the USGS servers about 10 years ago, but their 'ask a question' sites are saying such a file/list does not exist.  Thanks.

I am sure it is not complete, GNIS includes golf courses in the Locale feature type.

Unless you need them for some specific reason, I would say you are using too many levels.  I believe cgpsmapper makes a set of coordinates for each zoom level, so the .img files will be much bigger with a lot of zoom levels.

1. Use GM to make a .mp file.  Either use a text editor to change the Transparency setting to 'Y'; or use the GM default for .mp with a small line or two - then change the transparency in the headed and remove the data - then use that file as a template when exporting to .mp in GM.
2. Use cgpamapper to convert the .mp file to a .img file.
3. Use MapSetTookKit to install the file(s) into MapSource.
4. In MapSource selete your file(s) and the Idaho files to build into one gmapsupp.img file.  Place this file on the GPSr - overriding any which may be on it.

You will probably do this a few times to tweak the line style and zoom-level; or create your own custom line style.

In most (if not all) areas there are signs at the entrance ramps to Interstate Highways indicating is it is illegal to bike on them, so Garmin is correct in not using them in bike mode.

I used GM to look at the Tiger edge file for Clallam co WA.  I sampled 30+- lines (mostly roads) across the county, but did not find any duplicates - by using the digitized tool, clicking on a line, and deleting it, there were no second lines at the location.

The 800ft zoom/display level is bit-level 23.  Sounds like no features were defined past this level (ie. 22, 20, 18 ?).  Use the statistics in MapEdit to check that at least some things are defined to the level just before the 'blank' level (the level which indicates when the base map comes on).

If the map was made transparent, I believe the base map would also show, and being very general would really be confusing.

If you wanted you map data to show zoomed out past 800ft (like most custom maps do), then something needs to be changed.

Did Stan give any indication of what the largest .mp file size and/or number of features could be?
