Hi

I'm feeling a bit slow/silly/useless, etc!!

I brought a Garmin Edge 705. Also brought an SD card.

I'm trying to get my device to recognise maps I've copied onto the SD card, but all it shows is the basemap.

The OSM files I'm trying to view are .img files. Would this make a difference?

I'd be grateful if someone would give me some straight forward, step by step instructions on how to resolve this. The instructions that come with the device are pretty unhelpful!

Thanks in advance for your help.

If they are pre-compiled .img files then you just need to change their names and put them in the right place. Create a folder named Garmin in the root of the SD card. Copy the .img file to the card, and change its name to GMAPSUPP.IMG.

Your unit will only recognize one map file and it must have that name. If you have multiple files, you will need to combine them somehow into a single GMAPSUPP.IMG. There are several ways to do that, but the simplest is probably to download the free Sendmap20 program here: http://cgpsmapper.com/buy.htm

Just drag all the files to the program's window. You can then either create a GMAPSUPP.IMG file on your computer or send it directly to the GPS.

Hi Boyd

Thanks for your advice.

I followed your advice and then started up the unit, but I get a mesage that says "Can't unlock maps [entr]"

Any ideas?

I also tried following these instructions from this forum:

http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-.img-files-into-mapsource-with-mapsettoolkit/

But when I click Start on the mapset tool kit i get a warning that says: "cpreview has stopped working" and the window crashes/closes!

Bah!

You can't import the OSM via mapsettoolkit (assuming they came from the na1400.info website)

Sorry, I have never run into that. Exactly what maps are you trying to use? I don't understand why you would get the message about locked maps if they are OSM.

What happens if you just rename one of the files gmapsupp.img? I have done that before with an OSM file and it worked.

Boyd, it's possible to install a mkgmap (OSM) generated basemap.TDB and basemap.IMG using MapSetToolKit.  I do this from time to time.  Basically that's just a GUI regedit.   However, differences in the mkgmap and cgpsmapper generated IMG files make the cpreview portion of MSTK choke on mkgmap generated IMG files.

Tim either needs to download an installer with his OSM maps, or he needs to combine his IMG files with mkgmap.  See the code in the thread OZ points out for a list of mkgmap options.

Latest build is here:
http://www.mkgmap.org.uk/snapshots/

I've never had a problem creating a gmapsupp.IMG from mkgmap IMG files using Sendmap2.0.  But I've always just dragged and dropped them to my Oregon.

Can't be much help about "can't unlock maps".  Since all OSM maps should be public domain it doesn't make much sense, unless perhaps you have another locked map product registered with the same Family ID.  In that case you should be able to sort it with MSTK, and assign a different Family ID to the OSM maps using mkgmap.
