When I'm using Basecamp, I have a Garmin 24k topo sd inserted in my Etrex 20. In Basecamp it shows: (F) the etrex 20 unit and (G) the topo card. Under (F) there is internal storage and under (G) there is user data. Question: Is it better to have the routes and tracks stored on the internal (F), or under user data on the card (G)? I understand if it's in internal storage it can be used with any sd card inserted. Just wondering if there's a preference/faster? I think this is new on this latest version of Basecamp.

Do you have a card from Garmin that was pre-loaded with the 24k topo? If so, I think it's a bad idea to store any additional data on it. I have one of these and there isn't a lot of free space either.

It is a Garmin pre loaded topo sd. I thought it might be a bad idea, but it is listed as User Data in the sd card tree on Basecampl

Ask Garmin and record the name of the tech support person.

Do NOT add any vector mapset data.  If non-authorized 3rd party data is used and something goes wrong, Garmin will not replace the card.

This kind of map is permanently locked to the original card using hardware copy protection. It's not a bad idea to back it up - just copy all the files to your computer. If you copy the files to another card, they won't work, but if the original card becomes corrupt then you could re-format and restore it from a backup.
