Ok, so maybe the title is a little brutal. I downloaded the Virginia topo and went to see the tutorial on how to install it using the Map Source (I have 6.15). The tutorial is strait forward, no question. But... All "Virginia" files are in .img format (plus one .typ and one tdb) and the only answer I could get from my Map Source was "5656445.img is not a valid MapSource file and could not be opened".

What am I missing ?
Thanks in advance

Boyd

I'd say that you read the wrong tutorial. Is this the map you downloaded? http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/432/

As it says on the download page,

Quotefor windows download and run setup. The map will then appear in Garmin MapSource

Really, that's all you need to do. The process should look like this: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-mapsource/

You do not "open" maps in Mapsource, that's why you're getting the error message. The installer you ran does everything for you. Just select the map from the dropdown menu like this You would choose Virginia instead of Arizona of course)

If you don't have a dropdown menu in Mapsource, use View > Show Toolbars > View to make it appear.

But are you running Windows 7 64 bit? If so, there are some incompatibilities that can make the map fail to show up. I will let somebody else explain that.

Follow what Boyd posted.

Besides not being an 8 digit file name, '5656445.img' is not even close to any file name used in that mapset.

Thanks everyone. Boyd's comment "you don't open a map" did solve the problem. By the way, the name of the image file was not a real one. I just punched some numbers as an example of a file name (wiithout counting the digits). :-)
