Raster question

I have some DOQQ's in .jp2 format with world files and want these images to display on my 60Csx...
Is this a possibility and if so what is it going to take to convince someone to do this for me? The total is 4 images and they cover the area of 1 USGS 1:2400 topo map....please?  ;)

Boyd

Have you seen this tutorial?

http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/creating-multi-segment-raster-topo-maps-with-moagu/

Seems like a lot of work, when there are other units like the Oregon with native support for raster imagery...

Dalton

Yeah...that's kinda what led me to ask for someone to do it for me :shamesmiley:

Answer me this, what is more intimidating; reading through that tutorial or actually doing it? I keep getting glasseyed when I read it...

P.S. I'm not getting an OR so that's out.

Unless something has recently changed; that unit is not capable of displaying raster images.
You would need an CO, OR, DK, or the new 78 or 62 unit.  I believe Boyd has mentioned one (or more) of the newer NUVI units can also display raster images.

In addition, Garmin's current limit of 100 (96) cells of 1024 by 1024 pixels will severly limit the size of a area which can be in a single .kmz file.  A scanned 24k quad barely fits with a pixel size of 2.4m - the DOQQs use a 1m pixel size.  Garmin has mentioned they may increase the cell size or limit of number of cells.  There was no mention of units other than those mentioned above getting a software upgrade to display raster images.  With the 78 and 62 being an upgrade for the 76 and 60, I would not expect the 'lesser' units to be upgraded; likely their hardware would not be capable of it.

Well, it can be done with MOAGU, but it's a hack that has limitations. That's what was used in the tutorial and I believe the author has uploaded some of his raster imagery here that will work on the 60csx. See: http://moagu.com/

Wow - I just saw this. It is actually just what the OP wants - made-to-order topo maps.

QuoteFor those who don't want to deal with learning the software, taking the time required to create USGS topographic maps for your Garmin, or figuring out how to install the maps in MapSource or BaseCamp for upload to your Garmin GPS, you now have the option of ordering USGS 1:24K topo maps in Moagu or BMap2MP Garmin-compatible formats directly from me. Maps will be delivered as a Windows executable that installs them automatically in MapSource and BaseCamp.

There is also Mapwel which takes a different approach by vectorizing images: http://mapwel.eu/autovector/hw_autovector.html

I don't think so. I have used OziExplorer CE with raster imagery however. It runs on GPS'es that are based on Windows CE, such as Magellan, Navigon, Mio and others. But not Garmin.

I have the newest model Nuvi, the 3790 and I actually tried putting .kmz custom map files in different places to see if there were recognized, but no luck. It does do very realistic 3d rendering, including DEM terrain and 3d buildings. But no raster imagery.

Actually no.  I have SE USA loaded in my 60 now (from this site, of course...thank you, it's great), but the DOQQ's, which have nothing to do with topo, were needed in rush. I've worked around their need for the time being.

Thanks for the help and the replies!

Boyd

Sorry, was thinking of DRG's, not DOQ's.  :-\

Moagu will create "bitmap" DOQQ images that will display on the 60/76Cx series, but draw times will be slow, about a minute for full screen draw. Once drawn, they'll keep up with a walking/hiking pace, but nothing faster. Resolution is also limited to the 500-ft. zoom level max, which works out to about 4 meters per pixel. So it works for these, but just barely.

For USGS topo maps, draw speeds are a lot faster, and they're usable.

Dalton

Thanks for the info. That'll save me from trying this in the future since that would NOT work in this case since I was in a boat running a river and swamp.
Thanks again!

I know one guy who uses aerials for navigating LA swamps, and he's happy with it even with slow draw speeds. For river running, aerials would be too slow, and too low-res; topos would probably be OK, especially if created with the BMap2MP utility.
