adding tracks to current topo maps

I just downloaded a topo map for my area where I do search and rescue and I'm wondering if there is a way to add the trails that we walk that are not currently on the map? I thought that it could be handy to get some of those on the maps.

Also there are some points of interest that are named wrong. Is there a way to get that info changed or do I just live with it?   :)

I'm a total green horn when it comes to making these maps.

In the past, the management of this site has always discouraged discussing ways to modify the work of another author. Aside from that, making maps is very time consuming and complex and you would need the author's source files. Why not contact the author of any maps that interest you and see if they are willing to add your data and fix the errors you have found?

Alternately, there are a couple pretty simple programs which can turn tracks and waypoints into transparent map overlays. These would then be visible on top of any other map that you have enabled in most cases. Have a look at these, they might be just what you need:
