Hello,

I just now found this website. I am considering buying a hand held gps. I downloaded the Delaware Water Gap map from NJ and I opened it. When I ran it, Google Earth opened and showed the area I downloaded but I dont see any trails on the map. Where are the trails?

Thx!

My wife and I are avid hikers. We have done some national parks and any trail we can find thats nice. I am considering purchasing a hand held gps and am trying to understand how im going to benefit. Our hope is that this website provides hiking trails on the maps I download and presto!...lots of trails to explore are on it and the gps will tell us how to get there. Is it that easy?
I just downloaded the Delaware Water Gap in NJ/PA and when I opened it Google Earth started with a topo map over that area. I cant see any trails on the map tho. Am I missing something?

Hope I dont sound to much like a dummy!

It sounds like you're talking about the map that I posted here: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/234/

This map is a scan of a paper USGS 1:24,000 Topo map covering the Delaware Water Gap area. So, "it is what it is". If something is shown on the USGS topo, it is also shown in this map.

This particular map is only compatible with the newest Garmin handheld GPS'es - the Dakota, Colorado, Oregon GPSMap 62 and GPSMap 78 series. As you discovered, it will also open in Google Earth since it uses their .kmz file format. To use this map on one of the above-mentioned GPS'es, you will need to create a folder named CustomMaps inside of the Garmin folder on the GPS. Drop the map into this folder; when you restart the GPS you will be able to enable the map.

If you want maps that show trails and you have one of the units mentioned above, you can make your own using Garmin's custom map format. For starters, see this: http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/onthetrail/custommaps

Here are some maps from the NPS which might be of interest:

Thanks for the info!

Are there websites where you can download maps of trails in any given area for download to the gps?? maybe people make custom maps and share them somewhere? How does that work? We were hoping we could get a gps and download maps of trails we did not know about previously and then use the gps to get to the trail head etc... then follow the trail using the gps.

Does that happen? Is that possible?

Thanks!

Kirk

You can make your own maps and post them here at GPSFileDepot. I have give you some links above to get you started. I don't know of anywhere else that you can "download maps of trails in any given area for download to the gps".
